The Hickory Nut Gorge has a wealth of natural resources for outdoor enthusiasts including hiking trails, bouldering areas, lakes, rivers, and streams.

It is a hidden gem just east of Asheville that provides year-round activities for visitors, community members, outdoor athletes, and all nature lovers.

    • The Hickory Nut Gorge covers nearly 30,000 acres in Buncombe, Henderson, Polk, and Rutherford counties.
      • This includes the communities of Gerton, Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, and Bill's Creek

The Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge spearheaded the study of assets in the Hickory Nut Gorge in conjunction with NCGrowth and SmartUp. The goals were to:

    • To identify and categorize potential new or underutilized outdoor industry-related assets in the Hickory Nut Gorge.
    • To create an asset map to help prioritize short-term and long-term recreation-based economic development projects.
    • Develop a strategic plan to attract outdoor industry businesses; attract outdoor recreation users, and connect them to existing businesses.
