  • THE HICKORY NUT GORGE

    The Hickory Nut Gorge has a wealth of natural resources for outdoor enthusiasts including hiking trails, bouldering areas, lakes, rivers, and streams.

    It is a hidden gem just east of Asheville that provides year-round activities for visitors, community members, outdoor athletes, and all nature lovers. 

    • The Hickory Nut Gorge covers nearly 30,000 acres in Buncombe, Henderson, Polk, and Rutherford counties.
      • This includes the communities of Gerton, Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, and Bill's Creek
  • THE GOALS

    The Chamber of Hickory Nut Gorge spearheaded the study of assets in the Hickory Nut Gorge in conjunction with NCGrowth and SmartUp. The goals were to:

    • To identify and categorize potential new or underutilized outdoor industry-related assets in the Hickory Nut Gorge.
    • To create an asset map to help prioritize short-term and long-term recreation-based economic development projects.
    • Develop a strategic plan to attract outdoor industry businesses; attract outdoor recreation users, and connect them to existing businesses.

    Assets in the Hickory Nut Gorge have been grouped into the following categories:

    • Trailheads, Climbing Access, & Parks
    • Outdoor Recreation Businesses
    • Lodging & Camping
    • Food & Beverage
    • Retail & Leisure
    • Exceptional Natural Wonders
    • Other

    • To find any of the assets available in the Hickory Nut Gorge, simply click on the image of the Asset Map, below.
