The Gorge has a strong retirement/semi-retirement population that is very active within our mountain communities. Many seniors are drawn to the area for its temperate climate, convenient location, access to quality healthcare, top-rated golf courses, the beach, and abundant outdoor activities including boating, hiking, kayaking, and fishing. For most, the Gorge served as the perfect getaway long before it became a full-time address.
There are many ways for a senior to become involved within our community. New residents will find that we are a very giving community with a great compassion for others and the land around us.
Organizations such as The Hickory Nut Gorge Foundation, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, and Hickory Nut Gorge Outreach are a sampling of organizations in which to get involved. Many churches have active programs for seniors with calendars full of trips, education classes and mentoring programs.
